Well, I thought I had my music all organized just right.
Turns out I was wrong.
Most of my music files are mp3s, which iTunes likes playing. On the other hand, iTunes plays hard to get with wma files. It completely ignores them unless you tell it 'Look, I want to listen to this song and you're going to play it for me.' So what I thought was my entire music collection was just about 4/5th of it. If I didn't have an iPod to play music at work I'd say fuck you iTunes and go back to Windows Media Player, but I think I'm pretty much stuck with iTunes.
Kind of like a boyfriend you want to break up with but he does have a nice car so you put it off until something better comes around.
On the other hand, there are things I like about iTunes. I like being able to sort by artist if I feel like it, or by album if I want to, or by individual song titles. That helps me organize the music into playlists to put on the iPod. You see, I have tons of stuff I've never heard, and a lot of it is by bands I've never even heard of, so I figured I'd start at the beginning and find out what I have. I didn't want to just listen to the same songs I've heard my whole life.
So I sorted everything alphabetically by song title, then started at the top and pulled about an hours worth of music into a playlist. Then I sorted the music alphabetically by album and added an album or two to make it about 2 hours or a little more. Just in case the album sucked I broke it up into 3 or 4 song chunks and separated each album chunk with a couple of individual songs.
So far there have been some surprises. I like a rapper I've never heard of called Tech N9ne, but even though I recognize the name Deftones the only album of theirs I've listened to so far, Adrenaline, pretty much sucks. ITunes lists them as Rock/Pop, but I would list them as Screaming/Idiots. Then there's a band called Tool. So far I've only heard 3 of their songs, and one it's a stretch to call a song. It sounds like a bug zapper and someone shaking a piece of aluminum sheeting to make it sound like thunder. For 4 minutes.
Not a real catchy tune.
But now I've got to add all these albums that are wma files, and some of the songs from some of the albums start with A, so my master plan to start at the beginning and work my way down has already been thwarted. At least I realized it now, before I got to C or D or, God forbid, L or P.
Plus, I'm kind of anal about artists being listed last name first, first name last.
Like God intended.
So not only do I have to go through and add all these wma albums, I have to go through and check each song and make sure the name is listed right. I wouldn't want some of my Tom Petty to be under T and some under P. Heaven forbid.
Like I said, I'm kind of anal.
On the bright side, how can Keith expect me to do any house cleaning when all of my music files need cleaning?
