Cabin Fever

There's a cold snap blowing through Casa de Cud right now. The actual low temperature Wednesday night was 1 degree. The grass crunches when you walk on it. The ground is solid as a rock.

So of course I can't stop thinking about my garden.

It needs some kind of major improvement. Keith said he wants to just move it to a different spot on the other side of the yard. Hopefully that spot won't turn into a muddy marsh every time it rains. I'm not convinced moving it is the way to go. I think the spot he wants gets more shade. Of course, that might be a good thing when the temperature's 100 degrees. Plants can live with a little less sun. Being submerged is a little harder for them to handle.

What I'd really like to do is try hugelkultur. I think I wrote about that last year. You cover a pile of rotting logs with soil. It raises the bed and the wood acts like a sponge. Plus if you do it right it's like gardening on a giant compost pile, which warms the soil, extending the growing season in both directions.

Win, win, and win.

It's just so hard to convince Keith I want a pile of rotting logs for my birthday.
