Otherwise known as Memorial Day.
When I worked at Citi every now & then there would be a 4 day work week. They always said the temps could work 2 hours early each day to make up for missing a day's pay. Somehow that never happened. The powers that be refused to let us work overtime. My boss could never convince them that it wasn't actually overtime, he just wanted to let us get our normal 40 hours.
Sort of the same thing is happening at King.
I thought working weekends & being a real employee would be great.
If only I was really a real employee instead of still a temp it would be.
You see, everybody gets a vacation day for Memorial Day. The day shift & the night shift are both off Memorial Day, but since the weekend shift is already off on Mondays they're giving us Sunday off.
The first I heard about it was halfway through my shift yesterday. One of the other employees was talking to me about how cool it is that my first weekend shift is just two days.
News to me.
I asked the manager if that was for real & he said it was really for real.
'Aaaaaand, do we get paid for that holiday vacation day?' I asked him.
'Well, that's up to your temp agency,' he said.
Riiiiiight.
Like Kelly's going to pay me to not work the day before Memorial Day. Kelly wouldn't pay me not to work Memorial Day, much less the day before.
Being a temp is just one step above being a slave. Temps are like Rodney Dangerfield.
They get no respect.
If I was a real employee instead of a temp I would get paid for Sunday, but apparently King has some kind of contract with Kelly so they can't hire me until Kelly gets their pound of flesh. So I don't know if I should be pissed at King or Kelly. If I knew about Sunday off before yesterday I would have seen if I could work a day earlier in the week, but I didn't so I couldn't. If I still worked nights I could work Friday maybe, but no. They did me a favor & switched me to weekends just in time to screw me out of 1/3 of my paycheck.
Dicks.
I'm going to call Tuesday & see if I can pick up some overtime Wednesday or Thursday to make up for it. I'd still be screwed this week but overtime next week would make up for it.
On the bright side, I should be a real employee by July 4th & that weekend I'll only have to work ONE day but since I won't be a temp anymore I"ll get paid for all three days. Unless I want to use one of my fabled personal days & not work any days that weekend.
AND STILL GET PAID FOR NOT WORKING THE WHOLE WEEKEND!!!!
