Happy Birthday To Me

I got a big surprise for my birthday. The Man had my car worked on last week. It turns out the heater wasn't working at all. Something about a valve or flap or something not working. Plus now my windshield squirter squirts. It's the little things like that that make a difference, let me tell you.

But that wasn't the big surprise. The Man also noticed the radio doesn't work. It never did. There's something wrong with the antenna. Or there was a problem. One of the things he did was put on a new antenna. My radio works like a champ now.

But that still isn't the big surprise. He said since my radio is just AM-FM and we just bought a CD for my birthday, he was going to buy me a new car stereo. Not exactly what wanted. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against getting a new stereo. I just didn't particularly want or need one. I used to listen to NPR in my car all the time, but when I started writing Sassafras I quit listening to the radio completely. I would just mull over plot twists and dialog on the way back and forth to work. Then we got my new car and the radio didn't work anyway, so it worked out fine. I didn't miss the radio. Even once the radio worked I rarely thought to turn it on.

I wasn't nearly as excited about my radio working as The Man was, and even less excited about getting a new one.

Then The Man had a brainstorm. Instead of getting a new radio, why don't I get a new laptop? Oh, happy day! Now I have a new toy I really like. A nice little HP, with a battery that really works. No more losing everything I wrote because the electric flashed, or the power cord slipped off.

So now I'm hard at work starting the sequel to Sassafras.
