Going Down
Last week when I got in my car to go to work I rolled the window down to let the hot air out. At least I tried to. It rolled down about 1/3 of the way and then stopped. I tried to make it go down farther, but started to hear strange sounds coming from inside the door, and the window didn't budge. I went inside and got my husband. He couldn't get it to work right either. Finally we were able to get it to roll up when I pushed the button while he pulled up on the window. I ended up taking his van to work all last week. He went to an auto parts store and picked up a new window motor and the gears or track or whatever it runs on. Then when he took it to the garage they opened the door panel and found out the motor was fine.
There was some kind of cable or wire or something coming out of the motor that was kinked and that was why it quit working. So he took the motor back. Unfortunately, the little wire that we need is a dealer item, and we couldn't get it until later this week. The mechanic said it might actually be cheaper to just pick up an entire door from a junkyard and put it on my car instead of getting a new little cable. And of course, our mechanic went on vacation Saturday and won't be back for a week, so I'm still driving the van. Hopefully, I'll have my little car back by this weekend. Oh, yeah, this is going to cost about $200 just to be able to roll the window up and down.
Now for some more updates, since I haven't written in here in a while.
We are still thinking about adopting. We got tired of waiting for somebody from the welfare agency to call us back, so we called a private adoption agency that said they handle foster child adoptions. We talked to them for a week or so before one of the workers realized where we live. Apparently, we live in a county just outside of their jurisdiction. So now we are back to trying to get in touch with one of the social workers from the county. One of the people at the private adoption agency said we might have better luck if we just wrote a letter and mailed it to them.
We are also still thinking about moving, but I'm starting to think we would be better off just fixing up the house we have now. There are just a few things I don't like about this house. The kitchen is kind of small, but I think if we just got one of those little microwaves that go over the stove and got rid of the dinosaur microwave that takes up half the kitchen table it would seem a lot bigger. I would also like to get rid of the kitchen table and put in an island, or peninsula, or something with storage underneath it and barstools along one side. I just don't know if we have room for that.
Besides the kitchen, I would like to FINALLY get rails and stairs on the back deck. We put on a deck over 5 years ago, but my husband never put up any rails or stairs. He doesn't like the deck because it's on the west side of the house, so the sun beats down on it in the afternoon. He says it's impossible to use the deck because there isn't any shade. I agree, it's really bright, but we could get a patio table with an umbrella, or put up some kind of awning or privacy fence or something to give us a little shade. Plus, there isn't any icky sunlight at night, so we could sit out there and watch the stars and lightning bugs, and listen to the cicadas and frogs.
The other thing I would like to do to the house is put in a doggy door in the kitchen door for my little dog. I don't want one big enough for my big dog, because that doggy door would be big enough for a person to sneak in through. I just want a little one. I was looking at them on line and there are some pretty neat pet doors. There is a door that goes on sliding patio doors that come with a transmiting collar. When the dog walks up to the door it will open automatically, like a door at the grocery store. I told my husband if we had a patio door I would like to get one of them and just put the transmitter on my keychain or something. That way I could walk around with my hands full and not have to actually open the door myself. There was also a little tiny door that looked like it was about the size of a drier vent, but I think that would be a little too small for my dog.
Of course, after getting a doggy door, and steps on the deck, I would still need to put up a fence. Otherwise my little dog would scamper all over the neighborhood getting in trouble all day and night. My husband thinks it would cost an awful lot of money to put in a fence, but I think it would be worth it. I don't even care if it's just a chain-link fence or some fancy privacy fence. It doesn't even have to enclose the whole back yard. I just want enough space for my dogs to go outside and take care of business without adult supervision. Of course, fencing in the whole yard would be pretty nice.
Oh, something else I wanted to write about. We had a wedding in the neighborhood. Our neighbor in the wheelchair died in December. His son moved into his house a week or two ago, and got married Saturday. My husband fixed all the food for the reception. He likes doing stuff like that. They wanted what they called a 'hoosier' reception, with just hamburgers and hotdogs and stuff like that. He wanted to make a real fancy spread with sliced roast beaf or maybe pork roast, but all they wanted was bbq burgers and dogs.
Well, I think that pretty much catches up everything. I'm going to try to be more regular in here. I think I need to spend more time writing in my own blog instead of reading other people's blogs. I'm trying to get my mom to be a co-blogger, or guest blogger. So there might be news from the great state of Texas in here to spice things up.
